About Sheena Shah

Sheena, a nature enthusiast, passionate about ecosocial change and community development. Born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, with Indian origins. She has been fortunate enough to have traveled around the World, engaging in culture, interactions and experiences.

Her journey along the permaculture path began in 2011, having been brought up in a developing Country, determined to find solutions, she quit her teaching job to devote her life to community development projects and enrolled in a PDC on an Island off the Eastern part of the Great African Lakes, Lake Victoria. She then proceeded to work for an Orphanage, where she assisted in establishing a school for vulnerable children and in implementing a holistic permaculture design with the main aim being a fully sustainable home and community engagement by engaging the children in gardening workshops.

Sheena joined the Permaculture Research Institute Kenya (PRI Kenya) in 2012 and managed their Executive Education Programme until December 2016, which saw more than 6,500 people trained to date from Africa and beyond. The programme offered long and short courses in Permaculture Design and three International Training of Trainers certified courses with local and international facilitators. Sheena also helped develop and design PRI Kenya’s reputable consultancy programme and framework for PRI Kenya. Together the team designed a participatory permaculture design curriculum which was offered to small and larger NGO’s and businesses across Africa, working with clients such as Save the Children, Community Forest International, Trocaire, IDDEF, Mercy Corps, Kenya School of Integrated Medicine, NRC, just to name few. Sheena also master-minded PRI Kenya’s social media presence from inception which really helped build up the organization’s reputation and storytelling platform.

Sheena was later appointed as the Executive Director for PRI Kenya in 2016 until she stepped down in 2018. She was responsible for the overall management, overseeing all field operations, strategies and programme delivery and managed all partnerships and communications. Sheena is known for her ability to inspire masses of people through coordination and overall communication and has the ability to weave together complex issues into cohesive narratives that can be acted upon quickly. During her position at PRI Kenya, Sheena also focused on regenerative business, using solutions and principles to level up and ensure long-term sustainable development and shift the paradigm which she hopes to further continue.

Overall, the programmes took an innovative approach to development, combining permaculture and entrepreneurship, working with local partners on food security and sustainable livelihoods through training in permaculture and enterprise skills alongside offering group development training such as leadership, gender and group dynamics. Sheena feels the African permaculture movement really does stand out from the rest of the globe because the groups works directly with the community and people at heart.

Sheena is now an independent consultant and Founder of Harvesting for Good East Africa, working on small-scale projects in Nairobi whilst still continuing macro projects in East Africa.

Sheena has also been appointed to now lead and coordinate PermEzone, a programme she helped bring in East Africa in 2016. Sheena has been on the Advisory Board since and will now lead the Programme Management within East Africa.
