A Kenyan registered NGO set up in 2011 with the aim of providing an umbrella for permaculture education, projects and research in East Africa. Our aim is to promote a permaculture whole systems approach to building empowered, climate resilient, healthy and food secure East African communities. PRI's vision is to see a community-led development towards a sustainable future that has the permaculture ethics of care of the earth, care of people and fair distribution of resources at its core.
PRI-Kenya offers a professional and comprehensive education programme in permaculture design and related subjects. We offer one and two day introduction to permaculture courses as well as the internationally recognized 72 hour Permaculture Design Certification Course alongside specialized courses on related subjects such as bee-keeping & natural building etc. Our Permaculture & Regenerative Enterprise Programme took off in late 2013 and takes an innovative approach to development, combining permaculture and entrepreneurship. We work with local partners on food security and sustainable livelihoods through training in permaculture and enterprise skills alongside offering group development training such as leadership, gender and group dynamics. Our new Research Programme links in closely with our Permaculture and Regenerative Enterprise Programme and aims to map the social, environmental as well as economic impact of our model. We want to understand not only how the permaculture approach is beneficial for the environment and its ability to create climate change resilience, but also its benefits for farmers in terms of wellbeing, gender dynamics and social as well as economic empowerment.
Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
