About Vic Gaffney

Born nearby Melbourne (Australia) Vic Gaffney is an expat Australian who has been living and working in South Asia for the past 14 years.

Since the mid-1970's Vic has been involved with Green Activism. At an early age he became interested in vegetarian (plant based) diets, and at the age of 16 began his exploration with alternative diets and vegetarianism.

In the summer of 1976 Vic was one of the original (and youngest) co-signatories to the Down To Earth charter struck at Bredbo (near Canberra) at the second ever national ConFest. This very popular "counter-culture" event has been running successfully now for more than 35 years.

Soon after Vic joined Friends of the Earth movement in Melbourne and embarked on a lifelong commitment to vegetarian principles and organic agriculture.

In 1980 Vic also worked with the VEGAN EIRIE in Kalorama (Dandenong Ranges) alongside Marijonas Vilkelis-Curas (currently operating 20,000 Cows Cafe) and began his first meaningful experiments in permaculture soon after the release of Bill Mollison's iconic milestone "Permaculture-A Designers' Manual".

Since then, Vic has gone on to transform urban and rural landscapes in sub-tropical Queensland (Australia) and over the past eight years in the high altitude landscapes of the Himalayas, mainly in the Kullu Valley of central Himachal Pradesh, and more recently in District Gorkha, in central Nepal.

During his time in India, Vic has initiated and founded Permaculture India (2008) - a national non-profit charitable research society, and manages the organisation as its Director & Trustee. Vic also founded WWOOF India in the same year, and in 2011 launched a new project assembling a national council for permaculture activism in Nepal, aptly named Permaculture Nepal.

More recently Vic has initiated and launched the Organic Farmers' Markets for India (2013), which is founded on the three guiding permaculture ethics of Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share.
