Its autumn here in Melbourne and last week I collected a bag of acorns.
I was pretty excited to get them home and experiment with ways of making them edible. I've been told several methods and wanted to give them a try. As usual I was like a bull at a gate and went ahead with cracking them with the meat tenderiser (with their shells still on) and rinsing them with boiling water 5 times a day. I'm also soaking some whole and may get them to sprout, making some kind of essene bread.
It turns out its best to let them dry first as this makes them easier to shell. Much easier than to crush them and pick the shells of with my non existant fingernails with my dad saying while he helps, "I can see why people gave up eating acorns".
Anyway, I'm still hopeful to make them into a tannin free pulp tonight, add some wheat flour and honey and take them to a one day workshop I'm doing with Robin Clayfield tomorrow.
I'll report back how they go :)
