Garlic & Onion Harvest

Project: Purple Pear Farm

Posted by Mark Brown almost 13 years ago

Weather did not suit but we got the crop in and now we ensure it keeps!!

Our garlic and onions have been harvested ans stored. We found that the onions matured early this year and it was an unexpected complication when we had wet weather just at the wrong time. Some garlic was collected before the rain came but most was still in the ground when down it came.

We hung some of the garlic in the shed to dry with fans blowing aross the crop day and night. Oh dear - the power usage!!

Here Bec - the super wwoofer - bundles garlic for hanging.

Some of the garlic and onions was hung in the lecture room and fans applied too.

Transition town members comming to see a movie were surprised by the lack of space - we showed the movie in the house!

The onions too were harvested to aviod problems due to the wet weather. Kate bring the first of the wheelbarrows  for drying in the shed and lecture theater.

Just on dark and still more work to be done.

The onions were spread out on tables to start the drying process and were eventually bunched for over all drying by hanging.

Onions spread for drying.

The crop is now dry and storing well. Next year we will aim for about five times the onions as they do not last long when the CSA members start getting their weekly share. I think we have enough garlic for a corm a week for everyone untill St Patricks Day next year.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
