Project: Purple Pear Farm

Posted by Mark Brown almost 14 years ago

So much of what is right about Purple Pear Farm can be traced back to the animals that exert their influences on the farm.

The cows in the first instance, bring a peace that is felt through out. There is nothing as peaceful as watching a Jersey cow chewing she cud, with big brown eyes and seldom an unworthy thought.

More than that they give us many regenerative assets. Starting with calves who can be onsold for gain each year, and milk for cheeses and yoghurt, and manure for compost making. They need little care and are a marvelous addition to the farm.

The horse is unfortunately no longer with us. Nothing drastic though, she was on adgistment and we needed the pasture for the cows and the lady who owned her was not able to give the time to care for her so she (Lady is her name) was moved on  to new owners. We miss the gentle mare and we miss her poo too. It bought diversity to our compost heaps.

The dogs are greeters for the many visitors to the farm. They provide some level of "protection" but mostly they welcome you as you come or go. Jessie Jnr. thinks he is a working dog but generally does more harm then good when it comes to bringing in the cows. Aggie is the sweetist little dog ever and most visitors want to take her home. Both dogs were rehomed from the RSPCA.

The geese are the real watch dogs of the property. Their warning that there is a strange car in the driveway alerts me as I am working in the garden. They also keep the weeds and grass down in the nut orchard.

The ducks are an important part of our system. We all know what ducks do!!? They make as big a mess as they can and foul the pond by rooting for worms on the bank. Apart from that they of course take care of snaila ans slugs. I would not believe the number of the buggers they can put away. It is not always pretty but very effective.

The chickens are the backbone of the whole system. We rely so much on these productive little things. They start by cleaning up the weeds and remenant food plants. They remove all the bugs from an area before the seedlings go out and they fertalize, cultivate. spread mulch and give us eggs to boot. You gotta love them chooks.

The bees.

The guinea pigs

The many others.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
