About Grant Van der Merwe

Grant is a Chemical Engineer by Qualification, and is currently employed as an Engineer in the Chemicals Industry. The need to upgrade his lifestyle to one of sustainable simplicity and living off the land, led him to Permaculture.

While studying for a degree in agriculture in 2011, and on a search for propagation techniques he stumbled across (or was it fate?) permaculture, and has been hooked ever since!! So hooked that he stopped his agricultural studies, and took up permaculture.

He attended Geoff Lawton's Online PDC and got his certificate in November 2013. He further went on to complete his Permaculture Facilitators Course under Belinda Ross, at the Hope Farm in South Africa in 2015.

Grant has implemented a few designs in his permaculture career, notably a garden design he did for his father at 39 Otavi Street, Swakopmund. He has also been involved in a three year urban gardening project between the Swakopmund municipality and the municipality of Malmo, Sweden, where he had the opportunity to write his first gardening manual, "How to start a garden in Swakopmund", to be used for training up of urban gardeners in the Swakopmund area.

His ultimate goal has and still is to fully implement a permaculture design on a 10Ha property that he purchased in the desert in 2014, and to fully make a sustainable living off this property by "living with nature, rather than against it".

Grant and his wife Annegret and their two children have successfully built their family home on the 10Ha property in 2017 and have started implementing the first stages of their dream.
