The changeover from a classical suburban garden with a lot of exotic decorative plants to a permaculture garden that idealy would provide all the vegetables and herbes for our family and be a wildlife haven in the neighbourhood.
This is a residential plot of +/- 700m (125m) being buildings, in a suburban area of Anwerp. The back garden has been a vegetablegarden and coop for a long time but the last 20 years or so it has been grass surrounded by very classical decorative garden shrubs most of which are not local and of no ecological or practical use. We have two big trees (10m and more), a birch and a maple, a beech tree that has grown out of the hedge in the back and will be big in 20 years or so. In the same hedge there are also 2 maple trees that were cut to the ground a few times in the past and have grown again over ten six meter tall trunks. My favorite are 3 beautifull hollytrees (over 3 m high, beautifull!). Luckily these bigger trees are all local. We also have a few big cypres trees that give a lot of shadow which I don't like. Nobody likes them actually, even spiders make no webs in them. And than we have also an old red leafed plum tree which is very decorative, half dead but still gives plums on the other half. The trees attract birds but every year there are less small singing birds. The front and side garden consisted of gras bits surrounded by odd evergreen buxus hedges. There are some more odd buxus-hedges in other parts of the garden. I guess my grandfather-in -law liked to make hedges so I will try to keep them as a tribute.
So what's the plan : To remove the shrubs that are of no ecological value and replace them with shrubs that have fruits or nuts, or are of value for wildlife. Make a vegetable garden and a herb garden (which is important to me being a herbalist). Make wildlife corners. Make a chicken coop.
This is what we started with in the autumn of 2010. In the next updates I will tell what has happened since.

PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
