What to do with 'Zevenblad'?

Possible uses for the aggressive weed Aegopodium podagraria, Zevenblad in dutch, Ground Elder or Gautweed in english.

I have a lot of this weed in my garden and I think a lot of people have so I thought it would be helpfull to share my experiences.

If you really want to get rid of it you have to cover the whole patch with darkcoloured plastic or ground cloth during a year. This will wear the roots out and the plants will die. I couldn't do that because it is between trees and shrubs and hedges and spreading from there. I found out that when you regularly cut the plants they are seriously discouraged so I started looking for uses for the cut leaves.

Our chickens love it! I give them one bucket a day of Goutweed and Dandilion-leaves and they eat it all. I don't have any other herbivorous pets but I guess you could give it to bunnies, guinea-pigs, goats, sheep, pigs... as well.

I also use the leaves as mulch in the vegetable garden, on the photo you see it between the sticks on which the peas will climb.

And it is also good bulck filling for the compost heap.

Of course for the last two you have to make sure there are no pieces of root or flowers or seeds with it or you will be spreading the plant in your compost and in the vegetable garden.

Marc Van Hummelen : It's also edible for human beings, Maaike. It's a bit like celery, to which it is closely related. Add it to your salad bowl or to your nettle soup for extra flavour. "If you can't beat it - eat it!"

Jonas De Maeyer : hey Maaike. Ik ben student strategic urban planning in Leuven en wij doen een project aan de rand van Beijing. Omdat de grond daar zo uitgedroogd is door exploitatie ,ben ik na enig zoekwerk terecht gekomen bij permacultuur als mogelijke oplossing. Ik ben er nog niet volledig in thuis en wij moeten een heel randstedelijk gebied ontwerpen. Ik vroeg mi af of u mij mogelijk enkele tips kon geven. Ik woon ook in Antwerpen daarom dat ik met u contact opneem. Als u tijd heeft zou ik je graag eens willen bellen of indien mogelijk eens opzoeken om je tuin te bekijken?

serge a a a proth : Maaike, good luck with it, it can be a pain. I find it not too bad because of the rootstock being quite compact, making pulling it out as you go along not too difficult. The young leafs can be quite good in salads indeed! For a structural solution, you can also plant genuine "Geranium" alongside. They will outperform "zevenblad".
