Project: Permaculture garden in Deurne
Posted by Maaike Mussche almost 13 years ago
I asked a friend, who has a degree in forestry to help me to cut the 6m tall maple trees that have grown out of the hedge in the back garden without damaging to many other trees and shrubs. Trees always turn out to be longer onthe ground then you thought when they were still standing. Wonderfull, those shoes with which you can climb trees like a monky! He cut the trees at about two meters above the ground. Probably they wil make new shoots from there which I can cut every few years as firewood or every year to use them to make baskets but I am not sure if this is possible with maple.
The big trunks I will use as fuel for our wood stove and some to grow mushrooms on. After taking these out I was left with a huge heap of the thinner branches. I decided to make a dead hedge at the back edge of our garden with these branches, prunings from other shrubs and some ecologicaly invaluable shrubs I have taken out. A dead hedge is a long heap of dead wood, prunings and foliage which are just left to decompose and added other material onto whenever it is available. This is a very valuable feature for birds, hedgehogs, insects and other little animals in these times of clean gardens and parks. It is understandable that it is not always practical or safe to leave all the dead leaves or dead branches or trees where they are in our crowded parks and relatively small gardens and a dead hedge is a good alternative for cleaning everything dead and dying and so robbing a lot of fauna of its potential home and shelter. In my case it is also nice to camouflage the five different kinds of fencing that divide our garden from those of the neighbours which became very visible by cutting the mapletrees and unwanted shrubs. So now I have about 15 m of dead hedge to put all my future prunings on and as a wildlifeshelter/corridor.
I will add some photos later...

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.
MemberA member is a permaculturist who has never taken a PDC course. These cannot become PDC teachers. Members may be novice or highly experienced permaculturists or anywhere in between. Watch their updates for evaluation. |

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
