How the Hugel-Swale is performing - November 2014

Posted by mary combs over 10 years ago

This article is the first to record how the new Swale is performing. It has accumulated water from the first significant rainfall since construction.
The first full length Hugel-Swale across the powerline has been completed. It is a bit rough around the edges, which will get tidied up during the summer. The pictures uploaded show the result of collecting the runoff from 2" of snow plus about 1/3 inch of rain. It will be interesting to see how quickly this water soaks away, but clearly this one Swale positioned just above the key line is not going to have the capacity to stop and sink the accumulated sheet flow from, say, a 2" rain event! Moving upslope with another 6 swales, as planned, and broadening each Swale is going to be needed!
