In 2014 had a chance to work on A few projects with relatively small acreage for livestock. Especially when Space is at a minimum, We need to keep a very close observation on how animals browes and how the land responds. The structure is developed for the lanes or Paddocks, but it is up to the livestock manager to make sure that the animals are getting their best nutrition from the forage in the paddocks are allowed to regenerate relative to the time of year and the frequency of rotations. The grazing patterns and strategies are classic permaculture site specific solutions. With all the variables, you really have to know your land and your livestock. Right down to the species of each member of the system.
Working with an Amish farmer last summer I learned the intricacies of his grazing system. It seemed complex at first but as we went over it A number of times during the week during the design phase of the project, it was elementary and simple as long as you were a good observer of the animals and could anticipate the response of the pasture. Add in the weather changes and the seasonal veriability and you have a multidimensional decision tree. As I have time I am going to try and map out this decision process and illustrate the movement of the animals through the paddocks depending upon the conditions the grasses and the preparation for each season's grazing practices.
