what we've been up to (part 2)

water and housing

When we bought the property, both housing and water supply were in a sad state. The house is bad by design, the water supply depending on dirty concrete tanks, barely sufficient for more than a few people. So we installed some new water tanks, of which we put 2 higher than the house backed up with 3 tanks even higher on the hill. For now we have to use a pump to fill them, which we will change later when we will build some structures above them, so we can catch the water running of their roofs to fill the thanks high up. But at least we now have RUNNING WATER :)

The big concrete tank that stands next to the house, we cleaned out and is in use now as our backup water supply. That adds about 12000 liter when it is full, if that ever happens.

We also have a hot shower now, well, sometimes, when the sun shines. The water hose on the roof of the shower is deliberately cut long, so the water inside can heat up. No sun means cold water though, but it's at least a bit of an improvement.

The house is designed as cheap as possible. It has a metal roof, directly on top of the bedrooms, which means it's hot inside. Not ideal. Also the location is not the best, because it has hardly any space around it to locate anything you would want near your house. Like a garden... or just some space to hang out the laundry. So we will be building a new house, and then a few more to house some more families. Work on the foundation for the first house has started. We've dragged a couple of big rocks to the location, and we're digging out the trenches for the foundation now. On top of it we plan to build a house using the super adobe method. More pictures of that later.

Finally, we made a nice place to rest. A couple of hammocks with a roof (with catchment) :)
