Quaking Aspen Permaculture is a high elevation dryland project located in suburban Flagstaff, AZ
Quaking Aspen Permaculture began in 2004 with the conversion of a conventional suburban home fully equipped with a water intensive lawn on about a 1/4 acre. Over the years it has blossomed into a beautiful award winning oasis. It has not been irrigated with city water in over 4 years, which is quite the feat for a lush food producing garden in Arizona! Irrigation is provided through passive water harvesting earthworks, over 3,600+ gallons of gravity fed rainwater tanks, and 4 different gravity fed greywater systems that use water from the shower, sinks, washing machine, and kitchen sink. It has been used as a showcase of what can be done in Flagstaff using the available resources. City and county officials as well as local resident have come by to learn the basics of rainwater harvesting, legal greywater system design, and permaculture. Recently the city of Flagstaff used it as case study of how much a property can reduce its water use and still look beautiful as they realize that water resources are limited.
All organic matter generated on site including humanure has been cycled back into the soil to build what started out as shallow, nutrient depleted, and heavy compacted dirt into what can be considered fertile topsoil. This soil nurtures over 20 fruit trees, dozens of fruiting shrubs and vines, and hundreds of perennial edibles, flowers, and herbs.
The growing season is super short with an average of only 90 days, late frosts occur almost every year, the summer nights are still cold and can potentially freeze while the days may be hot. Not an ideal agriculture climate in any sense of the idea, but much food is still produced and it has become a trial ground for what crops work well as I have tried hundreds of different varieties of plants.
Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.
MemberA member is a permaculturist who has never taken a PDC course. These cannot become PDC teachers. Members may be novice or highly experienced permaculturists or anywhere in between. Watch their updates for evaluation. |

|
PDC VerifiedPeople who have entered an email address for the teacher of their PDC course, and have had their PDC status verified by that teacher. Watch their updates for evaluation. |
|
PRI PDCPeople who’ve taken a Permaculture Research Institute PDC somewhere in the world. |
|
PDC TeacherPeople who claim to teach some version of PDC somewhere in the world. |

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
