Project: Bayan Ulgii Sustainable Agriculture and Economic Learning

Posted by Matthew Lynch over 13 years ago

A student has expressed interest in converting her broad scale family plot into another broad scale permaculture design for commercial vegetable production. Change is already moving at all levels, all because one person, my boss on this project, took

Upon entering Bayan Ulgii province we saw no trees until we finally arrived in Ulgii City. Locals can remember that only two generations ago, the river flats of Ulgii City, and much of the rest of the province, were covered in trees.

Just like the Lorax in Dr. Suess’ fable, all were cut down for winter fuel and building materials.

Coal Truck

The next thing to greets us is the coal-fired powerplant which powers this remote urban-rural settlement, providing central heating for maybe one-third of the city’s officially 28,000 inhabitants (but more like 40,000, according to local sources).

Lumbering roadtrains loaded with chunks of coal the size kitchen tables and trailing coal dust provide the heating fuel for the rest of the city. Much of it is trucked in from the so-called ‘Ninja Mines’ dotting the countryside. They’re squalid hell-holes of heavy drinking, prostitution, and almost daily deaths from cave-ins, discernable by the piles of rubble strewn across the landscape surrounding the encampments, a modern-day gold-rush for the black stuff we’re so addicted to.

Coby Brian
Coby Brian : The transformation from barren landscapes to thriving permaculture sites is a testament to the power of individual initiative. This shift towards sustainable agriculture not only revitalizes the land but also fosters community resilience. As we witness the quiet revolution unfolding in places like Bayan Ulgii province, it's clear that small actions can lead to significant change. Embracing projects like this is akin to cultivating another Eden, where nature and human ingenuity harmonize for the benefit of all. Bekean Loinse : The reference to "Ninja Mines" underscores the dangerous and often exploitative nature of coal mining in some Drift hunters areas, where workers face hazardous conditions and social issues such as heavy drinking and prostitution are prevalent.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
