Radio Presentation and Open garden/compost Workshop - my garden to Incredible Edible Broome

Posted by TANYA ADAMS over 10 years ago

I recently held an open garden day and workshop at my place where we looked at the 100+ Fruit herbs and vegetables growing in my urban yard.

Before the big day, I was asked to do an interview with radio Goolari. This went extremely well.

On the day we had over 30 people crammed into my yard.We discussed the permacultre idea in an urban setting, what plants I was growing now (over 100).

Water harvesting (condensation catchment), Organic pest control methods-(my bug house to attract friendly insects, lizard pipelines, dove seed tray and bird bath attracting area - all interacting in my garden.

I took people around the property showing the pond, where fish and plants interact, my chook pen where i feed my garden and kitchen waste - in return I get lovely fresh eggs daily (over 630 eggs in less than 6 months) and I get to use the manure from the chooks.  Fruit trees in large tubs, pond plant nursery, Worm farm and seed collection.

I was able to show my scrap bucket system - neighbours come in, drop off a full bucket of scraps- for my worms or chooks - take a clean empty bucket for next batch.

I showed the rabbit hutch - I line their hutch with all the grassy weeds - they eat this and flatten it out -it breaks down and falls through the cage with the manure - I am provided with manure and hopefully lots of baby rabbits soon.

People had brought some green and brown elements to add to the compost - having made a nice batch we then broke into groups to share - plant and seed swap. My seed collection is up around 220 varieties now.

I then was interviewed for radio again.

All in all, this was an excellent day - I have been asked now to do a seed saving workshop.
