Heap heating up again :-)

Project: Chaitraban

Posted by Jyoti Deshpande over 10 years ago

after the initial dissapointment, we had a breather when the heap was heated up on the 14

After the initial dissapointment of the compost heap not heating up on day 9, we covered it up with a tarp and thinking that will have to redo the pile on the weekend. when we opened the tarp on the 14th day, it was smelling sweet, was moist and looked darker colour! we started turning the pile and voila! the centre of the pile was hot for sure. could not really keep my hand in the centre for more than a sec. I guess it was what Geoff calls 'the ouch test' :-). The pile was decomposing in the middle and the green had turned to brown...there was no green left any more. So, turned the pile and at the bottom, there was a flurry of excitement! there were some insects scurrying about (could not take a proper photo with my small camera) but was very happy to c the life in the heap.

to be on the safer side, we put in some green veg scraps and some manure in the middle of the pile and covered it up...atleast now i do not have nightmares of the compost heap smelling terrible!

i guess it will take much longer than the 18 days but we are definitely learning!

permie friends, pl advise if the pile looks ok?

Dwarakanath Jnaneswar Ekkirala
Dwarakanath Jnaneswar Ekkirala : looking alright.. unable to gauge it from photos, but does it smell of ammonia? because there seems to be, atleast in that grey color photo it looks so, that there is slightly too much nitrogen (via manure). again, not really clear about it, but if it smells of ammonia or if there is too much white fungus, there is too much nitrogen. Nothing wrong with it, just that the pile will go down in size thats all. But for a first pile, its looking good! How is the moisture in it now, btw?

Richard Larson : White mold is a sign of an anaerobic condition (no oxygen), you have to turn it more often. Good news it smells sweet!

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
