We intend to leave five of our ten acres completely in wilderness forest. One thing that struck me about the Oak and Hickory forest is that, for ever acre of second growth you have there will be .8 cords of limbs and branches that fall each year. This windfall is surplus energy and can be utilized to heat four homes through winter in this region. Limbs and branches are also ideal fuel for use in a Rocket Stove.
One of our projects this Spring will be construction of a Rocket Stove that will serve as a model for Enerty Function Stacking. The design includes two Down-Draft Rockets to provide instant heat for a cook surface, water heater for in-floor heating, and for thermal mass heating as well.
Using an old water heater placed so that the secondary combustion takes place below and around the sides, water will be heated to create a constant syphon into the in-floor heating system. The water pipes will be placed right up against the subfloor and a two-inch sheet of insulation will be attached below the pipes. A vapor barrier is attached below the insulation. This arrangement will directt the heat from the pipes upward into the floor, rather than downward into the ground.
One of the things that makes this plan feasible in a Mobile Home retrofit is that the home is set on pillars, providing three feet of crawl space. This give excellent access to the underside of the floor. The old insulation will be removed and transferred to the attic. Then the subfloor is exposed and ready for the pipe and foamboard to be attached.
A new foundation was laid so that the Adobe Block skin has a good, solid footing, and this also provides a more stable thermal environment under the house. A second vapor barrier is placed on the ground below the house.
Function stacking insures that energy surplus, such as the solar energy lost in the limbs and branches of our forest, is used to create a sustainably comfortable built environment. The ash and char that is created by the system (admitedly little) is returned into the vineyard where a higher soil pH is desired.

The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
