At the base of the Surrogate trees a circular border is made of an old cut up tree. Within the borders is dumped approx 2" of limb cuttings then approx 3-4 " of leaf matter. A mixture of different beans and radish are then spread across the top of the leaves and the use of a water hose is used to work the seeds into the leaf matter. Since the oak was next to a sweet gum ball tree I've placed some scrap wire between the two and have planted a grape vine between them. Medium sized limbs approx 2' in length are then put in a circle around the trunk to decompose and offer insect and lizard accommodations/safety. Also purple saliva was added.
