We have set up a 20 X 60 foot hoophouse at Nemenhah Model Permavillage and plan to use Aquaponics Modules as central thermal mass to help maintain the growing environment.
Down the center of the Hoophouse, we've set up a row of twelve Barrelponic Units are set up with ten Tilapia Honorum/Mozambica crosses, with two grow beds each. In the grow beds I've planted peppers, tomtoes, basil, and cilantro.
At the end of the Hoophouse we've set up our growing and finishing tank. It is a 1000 gal. round tank. We've built a cob bench around the tank and this serves as the thermal mass for a Downdraft Rocket Stove. The stove burns very small fuels. The woodgasses are burned to 90% and the heat is tranfered to te cob bench. This heat is slowly transfered into the water of the tank. Upon the bench we've set up grow beds planted with cilantro, basil, mint, fennel, and edible flowers.
The west and east walls of the Hoophouse are constructed of Adobe we made from clay and sand from the property and local straw. The north and south stem walls are stacked to four feet with hay bales that will compost all winter and then we'll use them for soilbuilding int he spring.
Produce from the Hoophouse will feed the families and the surplus will be sold at our local healthfood store fresh food counter.
The fish will provide us with protein and fertilizer. Two vermiculture units have been set up to grow worms to feed the fish and to build up the soil in the rest of the Hoophouse growbeds. When we dress out the fish, the waste will go into the compost system for soil building.
Water runoff from the Hoophouse is collected and transfered to a small pond on the east side of the Hoophouse. Water from the Main House and the Cob House is also routed into the Pond. Water plants will be grown in the pond to add to the compost system. Chinampas floating gardens will increase the overall food production.
Our systems are beginning to "Pop".

PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
