I am from Northern Ireland and have been interested in the idea of sustainable living for many years. I was heavily involved with the Conservation Volunteers which fit in with my personal philosophy of taking grass roots action on environmental and social issues, while enjoying some exercise and company in the great outdoors. When I discovered the idea of Permaculture it seemed to perfectly fit with my personal philosophy of sustainable development, protection of the environment, and a healthier, more meaningful life, even more. Unfortunately my dream of having a self-sufficient smallholding remains that for now, as land, in the UK anyway, is in the hands of the rich!
I am now studying for a BSc in Geography and Environment, as I wanted a fully informed background to be sure that I subscribe to something that is not just a personal indulgence. I am currently working in Saudi Arabia, which is hardly a place to start practicing! But I enjoy the opportunity to travel all over the world and experience examples of people applying Permaculture principles (even if not labelled as such) to their lives.
I look forward to taking and PDC course in the near future (where, is yet decided) and perhaps a year out to travel around and get practical experience. I hope that in this time I will make connections or see an opportunity where I can make permaculture a large part of my future life. I would be glad to hear from other Permaculturists in the Middle East to exchange ideas, and perhaps start a small project here.
