Development of small experimental farm using permaculture. farm is for experimentation, demonstration and education.
In 2010 IVY contacted me to run an introduction permaculture course for some of the farmers they are working with. While there we decided to extend our working relationship to include consultation and work on their experimental farm in Svay Rieng Provence, Cambodia. A major challenge for these farmers, as it is for much of Cambodia, is the annual flooding which makes anything but rice production problematic. So with the approach of making the problem the solution we have begun excavating channels in a few of the paddies (rice fields). The larger paddy will have the traditional rice/fish/duck combination, while the smaller 2 have been converted to a chinampas style system. Currently we are focusing our energy on one of these chinampas with strategies to create a higher central bed on the peninsulas. One we did with a modified sheet mulching process that made a half metre raised bed. This bed has the added benefit of being very fertile, which is critical as the soil is highly leached. In India this type of bed was able to grow veggies for 18 months before needing rebuilding. On another peninsula we built up the center with soil and added organic material. The result is a peninsula with 3 terraces; one shallow water for taro, morning glory, etc.; a mid level that is for perennials such as banana, pineapple, drumstick tree, etc.; while the central high terrace will be for vegetable production, with the banana and other trees providing a structure for protecting the veggies from the heavy monsoon rains and harsh summer sun. It is a very exciting and informative process that will continue for several years.
Also on site is an orchard that we are hoping to convert to a jungle garden. This is a major challenge as the soil is exposed, depleted and hard. The trees reflect this with each one infested with pests. This was great for the last training, which was all about Integrated Pest Management and making bio-preparations. The following is a link to an archive of videos of my work in Cambodia, including this project. http://www.permacultureplanet.com/video_archives_people.html
After this course we harvested all the grass growth from the channels and built a large compost pile.
We have created a working design from which to work. This design includes the above elements as well as plans for cross-fencing, a nursery, chickens, fish, ducks, and pigs. i’ll be working with this group for the coming years to help implement this plan and educate their farmers.
the pin on map is exactly on the farm.
Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.
MemberA member is a permaculturist who has never taken a PDC course. These cannot become PDC teachers. Members may be novice or highly experienced permaculturists or anywhere in between. Watch their updates for evaluation. |

Permaculture MatchmakerOne of these badges will show if you select your gender and the "I'm single, looking for a permaculture partner" option in your profile. |
|
PDCPeople who claim to have taken a Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) course somewhere in the world. |
|
PDC VerifiedPeople who have entered an email address for the teacher of their PDC course, and have had their PDC status verified by that teacher. Watch their updates for evaluation. |
|
PRI PDCPeople who’ve taken a Permaculture Research Institute PDC somewhere in the world. |
|
PDC TeacherPeople who claim to teach some version of PDC somewhere in the world. |
|
PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
