Promoting practice and policy. Building an online permaculture Egypt resource base and networking capacity. Making information on classic arid region permaculture (pertinent to Egypt) examples avialable. Stimulating the development of example sites to be used as training venues and training of trainer programs
Egypt is one of the most vulnerable countries to ocean level rises and climate change. Her sustainability and development challenges are enormous and urgent.
Egypt and Tunisia Revoltutions are leading the world in demonstrating how powerful ordinary people are. We are who we have been waiting for. These revoltutions are total, as these citizens now reclaim and rebuild themselves into a people based, participatory democracy, policy and practice.
The opportunities for leap frogging into large scale sustainability, earth repair and social justice solutions are equally as enormous. As Egypt explores new policy and debates its new constitution and national laws, we feel permaculture has a massive contribution to make.
Egyptians have researched, created innovative working models and are actively promoting solutions for just about every major challenge they face. These were developed with strong international and regional partnerships with promonent global institutions. All of these have a personal, local and national practice aspect in their presentations.
One of the biggest contributions permaculture design can make is demonstrating the potent impact of integrating all these initiatives into a comprehensive whole. Permaculture Egypt is pioneering a network of permaculture/sustainability activists.
We are thus focusing on synthesising these diverse solutions in green building designs and urban planning, clean transport, clean energy solutions, urban food security and organic city farming, meeting water security, rural organic farming food solutions, environmental rehabilitation, sustainable tourism, new economic justice programs, and overhauling the education system into a working comprehensive whole for a greater impact.
Many of these programs and groups did not know about each other's existence and solutions. Permaculture Egypt aims to bring these roleplayers around one integrated "design table", as per the permaculture method and principles.
We aim to do this through connecting winner solutions, people and organisations in various face to face forums and online. We also aim to make as much perinent information about the permaculture approach available. We are using our new website and facebook group as a platform for building this network and database.
In Cairo (the main hub for now) we have been hosting permaculture awareness raising sessions and film viewing sessions. The response has been phenomenal. We are actively scouting for sites to be developed as demonstration and training venues. Several exciting possiblities have presented themselves, and we are attempting to secure funding, trainers, and volunteer staff to get these up and running asap. These will also be integral in launching a "Training of Trainers" program
One of the most pressing needs and challenges is translating permaculture info into Arabic. So a big shout out to all arabic translators and Arabic permaculture groups, please help us.

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
