Design, socialise & implement a sustainable sanitation (on-site sewage/wastewater treatment & disposal) showcase project, 2.000houses, built in post-tsunami reconstruction in Aceh.

Project Description

British Red Cross was building the project, American Red Cross was paying for water and sanitation. The first challenge was to design a solution for 2.000 houses to be built very rapidly on tiny lots. Next, while all the houses had very high water tables, 400 of them were flooded 2-3times a month, these homes were raised above ground. I designed a standard 3 stage system - 1.000l watertight septic tank + 3m2 subsurface flow wetland + 4m2 vegetated leachfield - which could be reconfigured to fit any site. 400 systems in the flood zones were elevated 1m above ground to prevent contamination of floodwaters. See photo with the kids ;-) At $3.4mil it was the biggest budget project I've designed and controlled. Underlying principle was responsible, on-site liquid waste management. Guiding Permaculture principles were; use water as often as possible as it moves though the property, don't pollute ground or surface waters, harvest nutrients from wastewater and use the nutrients to grow food or useful products. In this case, vetiver grass was the dominant plant in the wetlands and leachfields, although each system also had bananas and cannas planted into them. I re-visited the location 2years later. A local friend reported that they no longer had bad smells, frequent sick stomachs, or itchy skin rashes, or the usual mobs of flies and mosquitoes (wastewater was usually dumped in roadside drains breeding massive mosquito populations). Unfortunately, only a very tiny percentage of the 150.000 houses built in post-tsunami reconstruction in Aceh received what might be deemed sustainable sanitation systems.
