A 16 acre native woodland in Central Scotland

Project Description

The wood is primarily birch with a variety of other trees including oak, beech, sycamore, and to a lesser extent rowan, hazel, ash and elder. On the eastern edge is a band of spreading rhododendron. The whole site is on a north facing slope looking towards the Ochill Hills.

Since we bought the wood in 2004 for £32000 from the sale of an appartment in Edinburgh, the aim my wife Susannah and I have had has been to use it to bring life and work together, somehow.

Other than a 1/2 acre clearing on the south eastern edge the wood is all wood with bracken as the main under storey. The soil is a fairly heavy clay. The clearing was chosen in 2005 for the site of a small cabin, some early fruit and nut tree plantings, and after finishing my PDC in 2010 what I am calling Forest Garden#1.

The permaculture plan in a nutshell is to form several 1/2 acre or so "keyhole" forest gardens along the southern edge where the wood borders a field. The main rationale for this is the spread and increasing dominance of sycamore trees predominatly along this edge. Observations of their dominance over the other trees here andf in other parts of the wood suggests that the entire site will be sycamore in the not too distant future without some management of their numbers.

It's a big job and just getting started. Up to date info will be posted on the website which I expect will improve in time.

PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.
