Root 'N Roost Farm

Project Type

Rural, Residential, Commercial, Intentional Communities, Community, Demonstration, Educational

Project Summary

orn out of a desire to contribute to fixing a broken food system and eat healthier, Sean and Cheyenne have been building Root 'N Roost from the original 1 acre parcel Sean grew up on since November of 2010. Sean had just moved back home and Cheyenne came back to Sullivan County to intern at Apple Pond Farm. They meet by chance, immediately hit if off, and started getting to work on the land. Chey's internship was 6 days a week, so Sean worked alone most days and Chey helped when she could. A year later, Chey moved in and the farm exploded in size from a 1/4 garden to a 2.5 acre permaculture farm with bees, fowl, pigs, gardens, fruit and nut trees and berry plantings, and a variety of re-use and natural buildings. We're expanding onto land behind us that we're leasing from our neighbor and continue to grow each and every day.

Project Description

Root 'N Roost Farm is a highly diversified, permaculture-based, human and animal powered sustainable farm. All our farm-fresh products are grown by hand, using only hand tools. Ducks, chickens, and pigs help us work the land, bringing you the freshest vegetables, herbs, flowers, fruit, mushrooms, poultry, eggs, and baked goods!

We practice no-till farming, and never use synthetic chemicals.

We use our own compost, cover crops, and manure, and OMRI listed products to keep our soil and crops healthy and happy! Our animals get organic feed and have room to roam every day. We have a CSA and farm stand, and sell at area natural food stores.

Please have a look around our website and come visit our farm for a tour or class and our farm-fresh products! Contact us with any questions you might have, and

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
