Movin' It A Second Time

Project: Bunnyginup 1

Posted by Ted Russ over 13 years ago

When your supposedly honest farming landlord pulls a stunt on you, what do you do? You do it all again, of course...

My landlord had assured me I'd be able to lease the property for ten years, but then sold it to his son.  Aside from the fact that a lot of legal issues are still outstanding, I don't really want to discuss this anyway.  It's just unfortunate.

But by ten weeks I had a much larger flock of poultry, the rabbit population had been culled down a lot, and I was down by one housemate/partner, since she couldn't handle the stress of a second hefty move so close to the last one.

And this time there was no handy chicken run to move poultry to, it wasn't as far (only 40km of rather ill-kept dirt roads between the two farms) and I decided to use every day of my Notice period.

Also, of course, family and friends were all 300km away and couldn't really help with the move, so it was mostly down to me and a smaller trailer.

The animals could be moved in smaller groups because I could easily travel between sites and feed and water them, and similarly, once a few living essentials were moved, it was easy enough to live at either end.

The only downside of this was that foxes took full advantage of the lapse of human intervention and several animals were lost to them.  But a loan of a box trap soon caught one vixen, and my new farmer landlord poisoned another one not far away.

And now I'm pretty much into talking in the present tense.  Things are being set up, our first winter rains (poor and miserly as they were, they have brought n new growth) have been, and the weather is cooling down nicely.

Kane Charles : I'm so sorry about your situation. Moving and caring for animals, as well as living far away from family and friends, can seem quite strenuous. I hope everything will be okay and you will have a new, better environment. Keep your spirit of optimism! Time calculator can help you calculate time quickly and accurately.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
