How do you move a household, 70 rabbits, and assorted poultry and pets 300km? Answer: Almost all in one day...

I think the summary said it all.  Because of the distance, and the need to feed and water all the animals, it wasn't possible to move only some of the animals, or leave important household goods at the opposite end of the journey...

In addition, of course, I couldn't even go ahead and build new pens at the new location, because that would be 600km a day commuting - just a bit much.

On moving day, friends and family loaded the household into a furniture truck and drove that to the new farm, while a few other family members and I remained behind and put rabbits in travel crates, chickens in travel crates, and cats in travel crates, then loaded up all the easily movable pens and hutches onto a large tandem-axle trailer, with the majority of the adult rabbits in their crates places so they'd stay out of wind and rain.

The cats and chickens and the youngest rabbit kittens came with me in my car, while other rabbits travelled in a family member's 4WD, and at about 9pm that night, they were all unpacked and rabbits put into the pens that I'd managed to move on the day, a few stayed in a temporarily converted garden shed, and a hastily-constructed series of pens on the ground.

Luckily the rabbits were as exhausted as we were and didn't dig out under the temporary pens.

The chickens were left inside a luckily pre-existing chicken run, in the travel crates but with the doors and covers off, so that they'd just wake in the morning and walk out and be in their new home.  They actually started laying again that day, and never looked back from that point.

And a further trip back with the trailer got me the other two larger rabbit pens I needed, and provided housing for all the adults rabbits.  All in all, the move lost not a single animal, and the nursing does even remained bonded to the kittens so that they all survived.

Then, ten weeks later - another move as the landlord reneged on a deal...

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

Permaculture Matchmaker

One of these badges will show if you select your gender and the "I'm single, looking for a permaculture partner" option in your profile.

People who claim to have taken a Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) course somewhere in the world.

verified

PDC Verified

People who have entered an email address for the teacher of their PDC course, and have had their PDC status verified by that teacher. Watch their updates for evaluation.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
