Project: Fern Rd. Farm Multi-functional Hedgerows

Posted by Andrew Millison over 13 years ago

I've added a couple of photos of our recent and ongoing planting of this demonstration multifunctional hedgerow.

I'm looking for the least action for greatest change on the large swaths of fertile farmland here in the Willamette Valley. It seems that multifunctional hedgerows are something that farmers here with already established field boundaries and irrigation systems can super-impose over their existing patterns of cultivation without a disruption in their current mode of production. With multifunctional hedgerows we can bring this other layer of productivity in and demonstrate their diverse benefits and yields on the ground to these many large land owners. We will restore the corridors of canopy, improve the soil, break the wind, provide habitat, and harvest products as the years go on.

We've planted over 100 trees and shrubs, and more going in on Saturday. So far we put in basketry Willow (around 50), Red Alder (around 40), Oregon Ash (20), and Coastal Redwood (5). In a couple of days we will plant Red Osier Dogwood and more Red Alder.

may i suggest trying to include eatable or useful plants for either you or the wildlife. either they be trees, or shrubs.

Andrew Millison
Andrew Millison : Jordan, Great to hear that you're doing similar project. The plants in this project were selected for their usefullness, and also for their level of management. The farm that they are planted on is not a home site, it is an uninhabited (full time by humans) agricultural area and the hedgerow is designed with a zone 4 management level (once or twice per year maintenance). As far as food goes, the Ash and Alder trees are primarily for sheep browsing in midsummer. They are also both for firewood coppice. The Alder will be cut for mushroom log innoculation, and can be harvested for lumber when it is big. The basketry Willows are for basketry :), the redwoods are for long term timber, the bamboo is food for sheep, mulch, biomass, and construction, and the Red Osier Dogwood is for basketry and crafts as well (and a super native pollinator plant!). They are not planted directly as human food because this area is not suited for the more intensive management that tree fruits or nuts require. Good luck on your project, Andrew

Chief Phillip 'Cloudpiler' Landis
Chief Phillip 'Cloudpiler' Landis : Our project is on a long, narrow 10 acres. Our neighbors are building very near the line and we are planting long, versatile hedgerows both to provided winter forage for our livestock, but also as a visual block between us. Wild Turkey is a species that I would like to attract with the hedgerows and I am planting them is such a way as to traffic the deer away from my food forest and kitchen garden.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.

pri_teacher

Aid Worker

The individual with this badge is indicating they are, have, or would like to be involved in permaculture aid work. As such, the individual may or may not have permaculture aid worker experience. Watch their updates for evaluation.
