Millison Family Farms

Project Type

Urban, Residential

Project Summary

Residential Permaculture site on 1/3 acre on a well-travelled street. High density diverse food production and integrated drainage system into tank and small ponds. Chicken rotation system, fruit and nut trees, a virtual orgy of mulch.

Project Description

This is my home where I live with my wife and two children. I am rapidly installing Permaculture landscape systems on this busy road just up from an elementary school. It is a rental, but the home owner is very cool and thinks what I'm doing is great. We have a long-term arrangement for occupancy.

I began putting in the gardens in the spring of 2010, and am now in rapid transformation. The entire neighborhood is passively learning about Permaculture design as they wonder what that guy is doing now.

There are already 15 mature fruit and nut trees and mature Grape vines, Hazelnut, Apple, Pear, Plum, and Fig. I have a zone 3 chicken rotation paddocks for a larger crop, currently planted in Fava beans. I have several different types of mushrooms inoculated in chips or logs: White Elm, Garden Giant, and Chicken of the Woods. I've put in raspberry, blueberry, evergreen huckleberry, thimbleberry, currant, elderberry and many other fruiting, flowering, and herbaceous plants. The yard is heavily mulched, and beds are built from urbanite (broken concrete chunks), and inoculated mushroom logs.

There are 2 rain-fed ponds with aquatic organisms, and all woody biomass is incorporated into the site. There's a year-round garden that has yielded abundantly since I started it nearly one year ago.

Updates

Chicken Garden Rotation Coop: Zone 3 cropping

Here is my newly remodeled chicken coop. There are 4 doors, each leading to a separate fenced quadrant. In two quadrants I planted Fava beans in February, and now there's corn, squash, and beans seeded, while the chickens prepare the next quadrant.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
