In the spring of 2010 we undertook to redesign the front and side yards of 2701 from green grass to permaculture wonderfullness. We covered exisiting grass with cardboard and leaves, buried it with dirt a friend down the street needed to get rid of, and started things up. There are between 20 and 25 different fruiting and nutting bushes planted there now (most of which will be between five and twelve feet tall) and provide the middle story of the food forest. A low-water nitrogen building and soil pioneering cover crop mix has been seeded and is doing a heck of a job improving the soil quality out there.
**Update to the update (04/18/2011) all that lovely cover crop died back through last summer (as expected) and has been reseeded. But I scored a whole bunch of free rock facing from some old apartments last weekend to build paths (I will sink the stones to ground level and put woodchips in the pathways). I think it gives a much better idea of the vision for the front yard. I also planted a bunch more bushes once I got the paths laid out.
****Update to the last update (05/23/2012) got all the drip irrigation in the front buried and sunk the paths in and gravelled them. Added some more bushes and started a few different types of ground cover to see what will effectively push out cheat grass. Also added an "air chair" and started a treehouse!

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.
MemberA member is a permaculturist who has never taken a PDC course. These cannot become PDC teachers. Members may be novice or highly experienced permaculturists or anywhere in between. Watch their updates for evaluation. |

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
