4 grow lights, a miniature greenhouse and multiple stands and stacks of books supporting used take-out cups from the cafe I work at, filled with soil and the plants that I just potted up, Tomatoes, Peppers, Sage, Cucumbers, a Moon Squash so far. I got 5 seeds of this squash last summer, and to keep it going I have grown 2 of these into lovely little plants, taking over and stealing the light from it's neighbours. Oh how I cannot wait for Spring when I can plants the younglings into their new homes for the year, as well as clear out the space for more seedlings to get some 'sun'. Now these are for my own enjoyment and experimentation before the REAL thing, which i will begin to be growing for at the end of this month.
Now the REAL thing is going to be growing for my 'gardens' which are more like miniature or small scale farms, in other peoples yards around the core of the City Calgary, Alberta. Based on a Barter system in which for the use of their yards for the growing season, I give them a portion of the crop grown in their yard. The Idea of Yardsharing has been about in other countries for decades and has taken root in Victoria but has been slow to come to the rest of Canada, especially Calgary. So with my few yards I start out this Spring hoping to feed myself and others in a sustainable manner. With much to do and only a short little time to do it in, I plan and learn and plan some more, changing my plans as my knowledge changes just as the weather changes here.
These are some pictures of the yard that I have prepped last fall using the lasagna layering method.
