Our Garden

Progress Report

This year we harvested from our garden apples, raspberries, red currants, lettuce, various herbs, and from our greenhouse, peppers.

Our greenhouse and coldframe is now in place and a waterbutt installed to harvest rainwater.

We have decided to use a scythe (thanks Fruit Hill Farm) to keep grass and understorey plants at bay.

We use two compost containers to compost garden clippings and kitchen waste.  Our recycling levels have got to the stage that we now recycle all plastic, glass, paper and metals.  All organic waste is composted.

This year I finally finished the bicycle trailer thats been on the boil for ages and will help to further reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.  We do not own a car and cycle to work

Next year we are looking forward to planting a wider variety of plants to make best use of our situation.

Maria DiLauro
Maria DiLauro : Well done Liam. Sounds great. Also using a bike here and am very happy to lose the cost of car insurance. It is very hot and muggy here in the summer & arriving at work bathed in humidity and sweat was not the most comfortable way to start the day but hope to create work-from-home situation by next summer. What is the bicycle trailer - a shed? or a pull along for kids? How do you use a scythe, I might need this. Slan!

Liam Phelan : Hi Ute Yes this site is a fantastic resource. I find it very helpfull looking at what other people have achieved on their projects. I have to say that the work that you have done in Kilfenora is truly inspirational by the way.

Liam Phelan : Thank you for your kind comments Maria. The bicycle trailer is just a flat frame type with plywood on it. I use it for going to the shops for stuff I cant bring on the panniers. I got the plans off ITDG now called Practical Action years ago (actually 15 yrs to be honest. I like to take my time! Its hard to describe how to use a scythe unless you have one in your hand. The best book is David Tressemers one and there are some videos on the Scythe Association of Britain and Ireland website. The Austrian type scythe is much lighter than the traditional english/US one. Best of luck stepping of the tread mill!

Richard Larson : Wow. No vehicle is a bold step. I have a neighbor that is doing similar and I keep thinking about how I could do it.. Interesting report.

Liam Phelan : Hi Richard thank you. I am lucky in that I only have a half hour cycle to work and pass all the shops we need for weekly groceries on the way. We are well served by public transport such as busses and light rail in Dublin. When we need a car we either hire one or borrow one but that has only happened twice a year on average so far. It would be very difficult or impossible in a rural area I think. Every day I meet more and more cyclists on the road so its becoming a real alternative to the car in the city at least.
