I had an epiphany yesterday. I want to do winter gardening at my home, and not on my acreage that is my other permaculture project. I have a 12ftX12ft trampoline in my back yard that must be disassembled every winter or it will catch too much snow and weather it, possibly rupture the mat. It just gets shoved in the corner of the yard every winter till spring.
Yesterday, it dawned on me that the problem can be the solution. I have 3 cattle panels that will bow upward once affixed to the side rails of the trampoline. The panels are 16ft long and 4ft wide. I plan to make two raised beds perpendicular to one another, 12 ft long and 4 ft across. about 3 ft apart. I can then slide the trampoline frame over the beds, remove the black trampoline, bow the panels and cover the entire thing with plastic sheeting, essentially making a greenhouse/hoophouse for the winter. In the spring I just put the trampoline back together and move it, exposing the beds to the full sun.
Please let me know if anyone has any comments. I will post photos when I do this, but it is almost 90 degrees F today, so not happening for a little while.
Update: I built the raises beds from cedar, installed a soaker hose deep and added a wood core. I then covered it with sand and compost. Then I covered it with topsoil. Almost ran out of room but that is fine. The next step is planting ASAP and then waiting for the chill. You must be logged in to comment.
