Chickens

Posted by Carla Resnick over 11 years ago

Since introducing chickens, plans have changed, adjustments (and omelets) are being made.

Chickens! Wow, what an interesting experience. I first introduced three chickens, and since then I've added several more, and am now have 27 chickens in the back yard. Seven are just a almost a month old, the rest are grown. Hatching chicks with a broody hen is so much easier than dealing with hatchery or feed store chicks.

The chickens eat most everything green. And so, my healthy stands of chard, collards, daikon, wheat, grass, and almost everything else was devoured. Changing plans include fencing off small sections of the back yard to keep the chickens out, and now lettuce, chard, and other things I would like to eat are growing unmolested. The front yard will also be turned into more of a vegetable production area.

Fresh eggs are delicious. Watching chicks roam around with a hen is very interesting and entertaining. Weeding is unnecessary.

I definitely recommend adding chickens to the mix.

Ute Bohnsack : "Since introducing chickens, plans have changed...". Yes, they are notorious for doing that to people. :) We have also gone from "just a few for eggs" to about 50.

Scott Morgan : Awesome! If you're willing to sell some chicks I'll be looking to get a few on our land sometime in the future.
