First close look at the property.

Project: Te Moana

Posted by Craig Hutchinson about 12 years ago

Some positive results from the first good look at the land.

We have spent the last four days having a closer look at the property with some positive findings.

60% of the property was planted with Pinus radiata and Douglas fir about 20 years ago, and then left. None of these plantations has been maintained over this period, with the result that, though the timber is probably worthless as a commercial product, there is broom, gorse, and matagouri (aka Wild Irishman or Discaria toumatou) growing in the understory.

These three plants are considered weeds in NZ, but they are also pioneer plants, and close inspection under them revels that there are many native species pushing through. They are also all nitrogen fixers, which could save us lots of planting in the early stages as we try to replace (first) the pine with food forests.

The 40% that wasn't planted with timber is starting to regenerate with native bush. We will leave this to continue regenerating naturally.

There is about 5 hectares which is grass and tussock. We dug a few holes to inspect the soil, and were pretty excited with our findings. There is about 20cm of topsoil, and every spadeful produced earthworms (not compost worms). The soil is friable, and smells like a forest should.

We'll get some videos up in the next few weeks.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

Permaculture Matchmaker

One of these badges will show if you select your gender and the "I'm single, looking for a permaculture partner" option in your profile.

PDC Verified

People who have entered an email address for the teacher of their PDC course, and have had their PDC status verified by that teacher. Watch their updates for evaluation.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
