Project: Foxglove Farm & the centre for Arts, Ecology & Agriculture

Seeing that I started this page I'd best keep up with it. The first two weeks on the farm have been awesomely intense and already very enlightening. It’s interesting to come from the perspective of a permaculturist and delve into a farming scenario of course with an open mind. Michael said something to me within the first few days of working that has really stuck. He expressed that first he is trying to create a lucratively viable farm that is mostly focused on the local market and creating a model of how it can be done, and secondly he dreams of seeing everyone growing there own food and not relying on farms anymore. It was a powerful statement that I completely agree with.
So during the last two weeks there has been a lot of soil building, from turning in cover crops to adding compost and amendments and eventually forming beds for planting. Already we have planted hundreds of plants, from various peppers and eggplant to collards and kale and chard, tomatoes, artichokes and literally thousands of strawberries. It’s been intense but very enjoyable and healthy work. I am working along side two apprentices who will be there for the summer and helping keep the farm running smoothly. Michael has just gone away to Australia for a speaking tour on agriculture and we are hanging out with a woman named Triny from California who is helping us run things for now.
Well in a nut shell that’s about it, Lots of food in the ground and lots of hard work.
It’s really nice to have my hands in the earth and mud for that matter ;)

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
