Plant hole, swale and little pond.

Project: Permaculture Siebzger

Posted by Sven Horner almost 14 years ago

Spontaneously to a simple plant hole I attached a little swale and then a pond. Here's how and why. Pictures and video included.

2 days ago I had dug this one of eight holes for Elaeagnus multiflora. Soon after I had finished it filled up with melted water (you can see that some of the water stayed until the next frost the night before) slowly flowing down the slope in the first 10 cm of the soil - I decided to dig a small swale down the hill.
I wanted to ensure that the plant wont get drowned regularly - we have high precipitation here. Plus this hole was the only one that filled with water. Its a spot with pure loam after the first 30 cm there.

I then noticed i could build on this and dug a pond. I thought a pond can't be so wrong. :) Finally I filled the swale with gravel and topped it with the sod again.

Then I tried if it works:

Maybe I'll get a pond foil, because at least right now in the pond hole the water seems to suck away quite fast. But maybe that'll change, as the structure of the soil there changes by being flooded again and again, so that fine dust particles close the surface? I think i should wait and observe.
Another idea is to direct more harvested rain water from the top of the hill straight down (off contour) and then finally into this little pond. And if there is water needed elsewhere i can just branch it of with swales dug on contour.

If you want to see some more photos of the site and a little bit of wild life there, that i took today see my flickr album:

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

pri_teacher

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
