Kristy and David began their permaculture journey in the Amazon in 2009, on an "Awakening the dreamer" trip with the Pachamama Alliance. Witnessing the destruction of people and the lungs of the planet, they made a sacred promise to their Achuar hosts to help change the nightmare dream of the modern world. Back home, near Seattle, they helped establish Transition Snoqualmie Valley. Kristy, with her connections and work in community educational, governmental, and health systems, helped organize events and activities including a seed exchange and a "New Livelihoods Job Fair"- sort of like a communiversity in a day.
In 2012, the couple explored Costa Rica exploring the possibility of investing in land where they fell in love with a 33 acre degraded, eroded, but green, clean, and beautiful former dairy farm. Faster than they imagined, the couple re-located and began building a permaculture demonstration site.
Patos Suertudos has hosted work-exchange volunteers from around the globe: more than 130 from 26 countries to help establish food, medicinal and wood forests.
Patos Suertudos hosted a medicinal plant workshop with Ed Bernhardt of the New Dawn Center, author of Medicinal Plants of Costa Rica. His guide on Organic Gardening in Costa Rica a reference used in establishing sustainable food systems in these rainy tropics.
Currently, Patos Suertudos offers PDC course certificates for volunteer work exchange. The program is small and personalized on site in Costa Rica. You can learn more at www.patossuertudos.com where volunteers and guests can apply to participate. The website also features many helpful links from Digging Deeper into Permaculture, changing the world, a blog, and much more.
