The Gilkerson family has invested their lives into organic farming with permaculture techniques. They have 26 years of experience producing large yields of produce on roughly 12 acres. They produce in order to sell at 3 weekly farmers markets in and near Arcata, CA. Experience includes growing and harvesting many varieties of peppers, there's corn, lettuce, carrots, tomatillos, tomatoes, lettuce, beans, many types of berries, cabbage, grapes, kiwis, mulberries and a huge orchard and much more. The entire, upper property used to be a wetland. Trenching and water redirection allows for sustainable watering. The structures are mostly off grid with a bit of hydroelectric power. Dean installed a small wood mill, so all construction wood is made sustainably on site. There is an abandoned mulberry, apple and other tree orchard which can use some loving hands. There is another lofted cabin that could use some people to keep bears out of the orchard. Dogs are okay there. The river runs at the edge of the property and makes for a beautiful sound and relaxation beach. Three days per week of work requested, with siestas in the mid-afternoon heat. Super easy going schedule. Get ready to learn about farming. It's an unforgettable farm. There is an octoganal river cabin for interns and farmers to share. There are tent options as well. Please bring your own food staples, but be ready to eat fresh produce. They are also a part of WWOOF.
It's an oasis with a beautiful family. Dean & Missy and their beauties Eliana and Myel (plus so many farm animals).
