About Stephen Pahl

After graduation from High School I spent 6 years in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Skate SSN 578 (Nuclear Attack Submarine)[engine room operator and reactor maintenance]. After that I atended college with interest in design (drafting) and science (from Landscape design to oceanography with a wide variety of Mechanical & Biological & Energy sciences). My studies got side tracked after having my leg broken in 6 places and spending a year in a full leg cast.

After discovering the Whole Earth Catalog while living in Big Sur Ca., I became very interested in the state of farming world wide and in finding ways to reverse the destruction of farmland in America and internationally. I've spent the last 20+ years learning all I could about all aspects of farming from the basics of growing crops and raising Livestock, to the organic and inorganic sciences and technologies that influence land & water use, environmental considerations and farm design.

Four years ago I began designing a 21st century version of the family farm (20-50 acres) that not only attempted to bring the newest ideas and technologies to the field of permaculture but to introduce new design ideas that would take farming into the future with the concept of "Solar Farming" (the idea that farmers were "Energy Managers" and that they were in fact Solar Farmers who could use their skills to convert Solar Energy into food and usable energy while repairing both farm land and the environment)

In the process influenced by the work of people like Bill Mollison, Geoff Lawton, Sepp Holzer and the good people at Polyface farms and using the principles of Organic Sustainable Permaculture, I have created and designed a 30 acre Digitally Organic Permaculture Farm. A design that may be completely self sustaining, capable of producing 3 to 5 time the amount of food of any farm its size, requiring fewer than half the number of people to operate it, capable of recycling 100% of its waste stream.

Called "Solarmax Farm" (www.solarmaxfarm.com) it has been design to serve as a Research station for all aspects of farming and and Educational center for learning on site and on the Web.

It is my hope that I can raise the money and support to build it in the Pacific Northwest and open it to the public, locally and internationally (web) so that it can help spread the ideas and concepts that are needed to reverse the trends of large land destroying Monoculture farming practices used around the world today.
