"Teacher seeks pupil; must have earnest desire to change the world." From the day I first read them, these words still ring loudly in my head. While in college and playing baseball, I had what I call my life epiphany. It was then that I became aware of what our society had become. It was built on commercialization, consumerism, and materialism, looking out for only "elite" or "privileged" individuals rather than the collective whole and all that inhabits and is native to our planet. I came to the realization that I was the pupil and our world and natural environment was my teacher. I began to focus on what is most important; healthy food, clean water, shelter, community, art and freedom of expression, and compassion and support for each other. Things that are at the heart of a holistic and sustainable lifestyle. It was at this point that I decided to step away from baseball and school and begin practicing what I was preaching. I became an organic farmer and have been so for the past four years. My farming experiences opened me up to methods in composting, worm farming, permaculture, biodynamics, Korean Natural farming, agroforestry and silvopasture, animal raising, aquaponics, wild food foraging, seasonal eating, and food preservation. All things I now consider at the core of my being. Farming also opened up opportunities for me beyond growing food. It allowed me to grow my knowledge and skills with natural building, plant based medicine, carpentry, construction, machine operation, water catchment and treatment, and renewable and alternative energies. More importantly, it allowed me to begin growing communities and educating others. We are faced with a constant disconnect this day-in-age. Now more than ever, we need to bring back our sense of oneness and one tribe, one people. Farming has also allowed me to travel, which is one of the most important things a person can do. It has opened me up to new perspectives, different ways of life, and varying practices. Through it all though, it has helped bridge the disconnect between us and aid in the rise of a new day dawning... Beyond my passion for learning, so that I am better equipped to change the world, I enjoy spending my time playing and writing music, baking and cooking, spending time connected with nature, meditating and practicing yoga, hiking, and kayaking.
