Organic Farm, Beaumont Alberta

Project Type

Rural

Project Summary

The Owner of the Organic farm was unable to market her milk products from her goats as the farm was suffering from extremely wet conditions due to exceptionally heavy rains in the spring of 2011. As a result of the rainfall, much of the farm was full of mud and puddles causing the goats to suffer from a fungal growth.

Project Description

The property already had two ponds that had been built in previous years to counter heavy rain conditions however; your could see by the satelite image of the property that the house and many of the farm buildings had been placed directly at the centre of an old river bed.

We determined the source and sink for the water on the property and designed two major swales which connected with the existing ponds. We expanded planting of trees, shrubs and rock systems surrounding the ponds. built wicking beds around the house and increased tree and shrub planting surrounding the house. Moved the gardens to be closer to the house, built a spiral herb garden, moved the humanure toilet to be close to the chicken coop and existing compost systems. changed the fencing systems for both the chickens and the goats to align better with swales and existing pathways, roads and water features. We Added an additional pond west of the house and created a micro climate which will house beehives.

The farm had very few trees which definitely compounded the situation and the trees that had been planted were so tiny to be lost in the tall grasses. We had the grass chopped and dropped to wrap around the base of each of the trees and provide some mulch to the base and recommended a much higher planting regiment for the property.

Overall, our plan improved mobility and accessiblity to the various zones on the property. The original earthworks had really chewed up the property and we found that many of our initiatives tamed these areas and brought production back into an orderly flow. The chickens and goats are happier and with additional fencing, the chickens no longer had control of the entire yard, house and garage entrance (which was creating quite a mess)

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
