The impetus for The Cove Community Garden arose in 2010 from a group of like minded people who recognised the need for a space where members of the community could come together to learn, participate and grow as a community in a shared garden environment.
The vision of The Cove Community Garden is to develop an edible botanic garden to: 1. Promote, encourage and assist in cultivating, growing and cooking of organic fruit and vegetables 2. Educate the members of the TCCG and the community in sustainable living practices and how to adapt them into their living situations. 3. Support schools in teaching the growing of plants and sustainability To this end TCCG aim to develop a garden that incorporates the following features: ♥ Food Forest A self-sustaining- combination of fruit nut and edible foliage plus a useful timber forest. ♥ Bush tucker Australian native indigenous trees shrubs and grasses ♥ Exotic Fruits Edible Sub-Tropical fruit and nut species that are rare and unusual, with great flavour and not readily available in supermarkets. ♥ Farmers Market Future plans as the community garden grows are to provide an outlet for excess production. This will allow local organic growers to be able to sell their excess produce. ♥ Seed Saving To create a store of openly pollinated organic seeds that have proven flavour and vigour for our particular climate for use in the garden. Excess seeds to be sold for self-sustaining profit ♥ Nursery To provide seedlings and cuttings of organic fruit and vegetable that will grow in our particular climate, for use in the garden and excess sold for self-sustaining profit ♥ Co Op To purchase in bulk goods or services the members require at wholesale prices with minimal mark up and to market excess produce or services giving added value to the community. ♥ Educational, Growing and Preserving – Demonstrations of Composting, Worm Farming, Pruning, Grafting, Seed Raising, Cheese Making, Bread Making, Sausage Making, etc (as requested) – Educational classes will be given on various methods of growing and preserving produce ♥ Involvement with local school Invite and encourage school participation in fresh food growing and education ♥ Combine on one site fresh food, sport and recreation A holistic approach to healthy living by encouraging healthy eating with an active lifestyle ♥ Not for Profit All money raised by TCCG will be returned to the community garden to benefit members in opportunities such as, purchase of shared equipment, excursions, expansions, investment, etc. (decided by the members) ♥ Charitable Component Excess food will be donated to charity for food packages for members of our community in need Along with this, it is intended that the community garden will: ♥ Promote health and wellbeing Use gardening as physical exercise, social interaction and access to healthier food options. ♥ Cultivate open and inclusive environment Encourage multi generational and multicultural social interaction for people of all abilities ♥ Foster community building Bring people together and give them an opportunity to grow their own food. ♥ Inspire entrepreneurship Introduce people to new ideas and products so that they can then specialise in an element of food production. ♥ Create employment Develop employment opportunities through entrepreneurship, tourism, and acquiring new skills ♥ Provide tourism opportunities Promote tourist interest with farmers market, food production workshops, guided tours of food forest and bush tucker forest, sale of exotic fruits and products. The Cove Community Garden is committed to localising organic food production and cultivating community |

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.
MemberA member is a permaculturist who has never taken a PDC course. These cannot become PDC teachers. Members may be novice or highly experienced permaculturists or anywhere in between. Watch their updates for evaluation. |

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
