As Bahçeşehir Kindergarten, a project in our school taking the permaculture philosophy as an example We did. The aim is to ensure that children are nature-friendly and nature-friendly individuals. to help them catch up. Generations moving with nature without being against nature This project was implemented as the first steps of training. . The most important educational tool of nature-based education is "nature". Every living and non-living object found in nature is a part of sensory, cognitive and physical education in children's education. Children like to collect flowers, leaves, and various shells, and the movement of animals in their immediate environment attracts them. Thus, during this period, children begin to gain their first experiences in science and nature activities. Children research their surroundings, acquire knowledge as a result of some of their experiences and thus form a basis for learning new things. As Bahçeşehir Kindergarten, how sustainable life, food, energy, shelter and other material and spiritual needs can be integrated in harmony with nature; At the same time, the process started with researches on how to introduce permaculture philosophy to preschool children. First of all, we ensured that a permaculture seminar was held in our school and we ensured the participation of teachers in our school and teachers from different branches in the surrounding schools. Thus, the teachers at our school became acquainted with the permaculture philosophy. In the 2019-2020 academic year, we started permaculture activities with children studying at our school. Simultaneously, we decided to participate in the StarT Luma contest with our project named "Permaculture - Life in Harmony with Nature" in the category of Best Education Practices under the theme of "Sustainable Development". We gave importance to the fact that our teachers in the project team received Permaculture education first. After the team was formed, we moved to the logo design and training stages of our project. After the training program was determined, we made many educational practices both inside and outside the classroom. The studies conducted within the scope of the education program were categorized as soil, food, energy, shelter, workshops, science-mathematics-technology studies, recycling and trips. In addition, arrangements have been made in our school garden in accordance with the permaculture philosophy. The studies and categories are as follows: • Soil Theme: Making compost in order to obtain fertile soil in soil contact, creating raised vegetable beds and planting plants, making a worm tower, traveling about how to get charcoal, creating greenhouses and growing plants in these greenhouses, creating a compost storage area, mulching. etc. • Food: Apple cider vinegar was made in our school with organic apples collected by children. The apple cider vinegars obtained were bottled and labeled with the labels created by our children. As part of winter preparations, our children have dried pickles. Quince jam, quince dessert, quince compote and quince tea were made with our children with quince from winter fruits. Pomegranate syrup was made with pomegranate fruit. The prepared pomegranate syrups were bottled and the label stuck on the bottles was created by our children. Pumpkin dessert and pumpkin soup were made from winter vegetables. Yoghurt and cheese were obtained from organic milk. • Energy: Engineers from Istanbul Municipality come to our school and what is energy? What are Renewable Energy Sources? They made a presentation on the Importance of Using Renewable Energy Sources and Energy Saving. In-class and out-of-class activities were held on solar energy, solar panels and their functions, wind turbines and their functions, how electricity is produced from hydroelectric power plants, and wind energy. Rainwater evaluation studies have been carried out. • Housing: Different house types with children were studied. Presentations were made on how humans and animals have created shelters for themselves from past to present. Shelters made in accordance with climatic characteristics in different climatic zones What is a geodesic dome? How is it done? Visual presentations were made to the children about their subjects. With the participation of the family, children and families created model geodesic domes with straws. In our school, a tent was built with pruned tree branches where children can play in the garden. T-shirts, fabrics, linens etc. that are no longer used in the construction of this tent. used. • Workshops: “Seed ball making” workshop, “solar panel home-made workshop”; "Wind energy production workshop" works were carried out. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
