We are creating replicable closed-loop mixed & integrated farming systems for (and with) Orang Asli indigenous families in Malaysia

Project Description

Hi, Dennis here **PROJECT** This first project is at Kampung Kachau Luar near Semenyih (Selangor Malaysia, about 50 kms outside Kuala Lumpur). (we call it KKL - btw Kampung means Village:) It is a commercial venture (we aren't believers in charity:) and we have a profit share deal with our local indigenous partners. We are also creating a CSR fund for corporates to donate too, which will give us the capital to set up the farms with the Asli partners - these capex funds are repayable from harvest profits. Read how here https://www.csr-done-differently.weebly.com **GOALS** The intention is to generate an average of RM1,000 (US$250) per month for our Asli family partners once we go to the planned Profit share of 70 / 30 (70 Asli partner, 30 us). For now the profit share on this one is 80/20 my way (80 us / 20 Asli partner) because we are covering all learning and set up costs). Once we can show we can deliver that income consistently, the farm replication flow should be large with many interested partners looking to commence their own "Asli Brand Farm". Those farms will be on the 70/30 profit share basis We handle all of the systems development, marketing, product off take etc. **OVERVIEW** We are integrating pond fisheries (tilapia, baung, patin, red tail catfish), farm birds (chickens, ducks, geese) with black soldier fly feed systems and vetiver grass water cleaning & managing systems. Also looking at pond fishing (ie catch and release) as a revenue generator as well, in addition to other opportunities we are exploring. **PERMACULTURE PRACTICES** This first farm is the trial farm, once we have the systems right, we will be replicating with other Orang Asli families at this Kamoung (and other kampungs). Obviously, we are trying to integrate permaculture / regenerative agri and organic practices into the farming systems. Primarily with this in mind, we are replacing commercial feeds with BSF larvae and other natural feed products, cleaning our fish oonds with vetiver grass rafts rather than chemicals and not using chemical fertilizers / pesticides on our vegetables. 	PRI Teacher With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
	Aid Worker The individual with this badge is indicating they are, have, or would like to be involved in permaculture aid work. As such, the individual may or may not have permaculture aid worker experience. Watch their updates for evaluation.
	Consultant The individual with this badge is indicating they are, have, or would like to do paid permaculture design consultancy work. As such, the individual may or may not have permaculture consultancy experience. Watch their updates for evaluation.
