We have been employed to design and consult on the construction of a community garden in the Sunshine Coast suburb of Kawana Waters. The gardens will take into account physical and intellectual disability workshops, children's gardens, demonstrations of permaculture practices and incorporate a school garden. The design stage is complete and a submission has been tabled with the Sunshine Coast Council.
The proposed Lake Kawana Community Garden (Veggie Village Offshoot) will be developed beside the Sunshine Coast Community Capital Centre; a vibrant community and allied health service hub located at 100 Sportsman’s Parade, Kawana.
The proposed garden will become a place to ‘grow our community’ through inclusive practices and family participation and assist in supporting healthy lifestyle choices and creating social opportunities for a range of diverse groups across the Sunshine Coast.
The gardens will be a demonstration site for how urban food production can be established and maintained using organic growing practices.
Regular workshops, demonstrations and social gatherings will be held on site for community members to participate in.

Objectives of the Lake Kawana Community Garden - Veggie Village Offshoot
• To grow a variety of garden produce using sustainable, organic practices aligned with the principles of permaculture including; earth care, people care and fair share.
• To cultivate an environment of experiential learning that educates and empowers school students, Community Solutions’ clients and the greater community to develop the knowledge and skills required to successfully produce their own food.
• The develop and grow a strong sense of community with students, program clients, the general community and volunteers working together towards a common goal.
• To create a beautiful meeting place that is sensitive to the existing functional spaces surrounding it.
• To educate the local community through demonstrations and workshops that growing your own food and reducing waste is affordable and easy to do.
• To create an inclusive social space where people of different ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds can participate and connect with the greater community.
• To raise general awareness within the local community regarding issues related to sustainable living, such as ways to use less energy, source local food and recycle household green waste.
• To provide a successful example of how public space can be integrated with other uses and for alternative purposes to benefit the community.
• To be a model for other organisations wishing to lessen their environmental impact by engaging with their local community. This can be achieved through developing creative local solutions to global problems and implementing sustainability initiatives.
Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
