A place to come together to discuss, learn, teach, share and express artistic vision for the betterment of the neighborhood.
One of the last remnants of the Central Freeway (a nearly 1 acre site known as Parcel O in the Market/Octavia Plan) on the corner of Fell and Laguna Streets, will be embraced by Hayes Valley. It will be activated with a variety of art-related activities now in the planning stages. Parcel O will operate under the umbrella of “Hayes Valley Art Works” collaborating with the Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association and the new Haight Street Art Center. All three organizations will reach out to our neighborhood and the greater community to engage everyone to enjoy this space for its lively activities and just being neighborly. We are pleased to have the opportunity to embrace this large site to be a place where the residents can come together to discuss, learn, teach, share, and express artistic vision for the betterment of our neighborhood. The site activation will be an interim use, supported by the Mayor’s Office of Housing, Department of Real Estate, and our supervisor London Breed, until a 100+ units of affordable family housing can be built, scheduled for a late 2016 start date. HVNA is in the final stages of an agreement with the city to activate the parcel... The three groups that will activate the site are planning a physical layout that will include seating, green space (a container orchard and other drought-tolerant landscaping), and places for activities. The use of the outdoor space will be activated as an art display space, as well as a neighborhood gathering space for meetings, and community based projects. If you have ideas, volunteer time, or materials to contribute to this temporary project, we look forward to your support! Meet the three groups working on this project: Hayes Valley Art Works, this organization will manage the site and provide leadership for volunteer activities and coordinate programming for the space with the other two organizations. HVNA, The Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association’s A.C.E. Committee will help organize and maintain the art-related projects that are on the site. The Greening committee will support the envisioned container orchard or other plant-related projects that are on the site. Haight Street Art Center, this new community-serving visual arts center to open at the new complex on Haight Street (between Buchanan and Laguna) in early 2016. They will collaborate with Hayes Valley Art Works to coordinate art activities and introduce itself to our neighborhood. The Haight Street Art Center led the crowd funding to create the new bronze Silly Pink Bunny to be installed near its new entrance on Haight Street. Watch out for announcements on social media, online newsfeeds, and signs at the site for updates on the upcoming burst of activity that will include your participation to make the site neighborhood-friendly. PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
