The Briar Patch

Project Type

Rural, Residential, Intentional Communities

Project Summary

I'm in the research and planning stage of designing an off-grid community that incorporates Permaculture principles to create a self-sufficient, self-sustaining agricultural landscape in a rural setting. I am seeking to connect with others who would be interested in coming together to collaborate and co-create this vision. I have not purchased land for this endeavor YET, but plan to do so once I can locate the right property at the right price. (Please be aware that due to budgetary constraints, I am looking at potential home sites in other states). My resources are very limited, so I'd be very open to pooling resources and sharing ownership of the land... (currently, OR land is over my budget scope, but if others could match or exceed my financial contribution, we might be able to remain in the region).

Project Description

My vision for this community is fairly straightforward: I see a group of like-minded, kindred spirits coming together to found a small Ecovillage that provides for its own basic needs - shelter, food, water, and daily social interaction. Based on the NA tribal council model of government, I imagine a circle of wise advisers being central to the decision making process with full community involvement by extension - i.e. there is no "alpha" in charge or hierarchy of leadership. Each person would instead draw upon their unique skill set and range of experiences to contribute to the group in their own way. Currently, I need a partner to help me start to move forward with the project. If we can generate enough interest from multiple parties, then we would need to make time to regularly come together as a group to form a plan of action, starting with the drafting of a vision statement and related activities such as a potential crowd funding campaign, website and blog. I'm eager to manifest this dream into a reality, but I have a limited window of opportunity - and that window is going to start closing fast in 3-6 months when my savings start to diminish... so, I need to move quickly and decisively. This is not going to be the kind of endeavor where people just sit around and talk about their fantasies; it's going to require immediate action on everyone's part to gain momentum and impetus. I'm excited about doing this, and I want people who are on a similar quest that are just as passionate and invested as I am. If this aligns with your own vision, and you've got some mad skills in construction, gardening, animal husbandry, wildcrafting or other relevant pursuits, I'd love to hear from you.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
