8 month Residential Permaculture Apprenticeship at Earthaven Ecovillage in Western North Carolina, USA. Apprentices will learn how to tend the land skillfully through an organized, hands-on, project-oriented curriculum infused with implementing and managing physical permaculture systems, formal permaculture design, and cultural learning delivered organically through a permaculture lifestyle at Earthaven Ecovillage.

After taking a year-long hiatus from offering an apprenticeship program in 2014 in order to slow down, rest and truly assimilate some important life lessons, in 2015 Zev Friedman will be venturing for the fourth time into the age-old apprenticeship way of teaching and learning. SOIL is excited to be partnering with Zev to unfold this apprenticeship into its highest potential.
In the old way of seed cultures, it will be an experiment, grounded in past experience but trying out new variations. Most notably, we are proud to be having this apprenticeship program in the heart of Earthaven Ecovillage where Zev now lives and SOIL is based out of, and apprentices will be living here on the land for the duration of the program.
Apprentices will be learning through hands-on projects, the implementation and management of physical permaculture systems on a neighborhood and village scale, with some emphasis on formal permaculture design and lots of cultural and “invisible structures” learning delivered organically through a permaculture lifestyle at Earthaven.
This apprenticeship program offers apprentices the opportunity to have extensive time learning how to tend the land with Zev Friedman and team of other guest instructors, through an organized and coherent hands-on curriculum. This program aims to foster passionate people who are informed about what it takes to create a beautiful, just, and sustainable world and empowered to be a changemaker.
Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
